At my friend’s uni sharehouse. One of her housemates - introduced to me as Kat - is wearing a jersey with what I’m assuming is her last name on the back: “McCabe”.

Update: her last name isn’t McCabe. But that makes her jersey even better. Because she’s clearly chosen the name for one reason or another (secret Verve fan??).

No matter how many times I listen to the track, my heart fills when - through a hazy wash of guitars - I hear Peter Hayes’ handsome, rich voice providing a masculine, darker toned backdrop to Aimee Nash’s exhaled vocals on Burn and Fade.

And I could swear the universe stops when Peter’s voice is singled out at a moment it’s so delicately impassioned with devastation: “Awaaa-aaay”.

Or maybe it’s just my heart that stops.

Blinking aeroplane lights at night: one of my favourite things about Sydney. I’m going to write a list of the reasons I like Sydney and the things about Sydney that have surprised me, but for now I just wanted to post these.

I’ve always had a fondness for aeroplane lights, particularly the blinking kind. I don’t know why, or where this stems from, but seeing planes flying at night and seeing the blinking lights in particular is something I’ve drawn comfort from for as far back as I can remember. It brings me a sense of calmness and I’m not sure why.

So it pleased me immensely that, when I first moved to Sydney - to Burwood - if I left the curtains open I could see planes flying by from my bedroom window. I thought it must’ve just been Burwood’s location which afforded me this comfort, because the planes seemed so big and so close, so I was surprised when I moved further out west that the planes are just as frequent here. And just as big. And just as close. I see more huge long-haul planes in a week than I would in many months back home. And I never tire of it. I love walking along and looking up and realising that among the white dots in the sky, one of them is blinking and moving and is actually not a star - there’s a giant, silent flying machine above me. Sometimes you hear them and sometimes you don’t, but it’s calming either way.
